This client appointment sent me reeling. It happens every once in a while and lately it seems to be happening a little bit more often. Here’s what happened…

I asked the senior and her mom  to quickly go through all of her images and star those that really grab them (there’s a reason behind doing it quickly, stick with me).  Done! Time to start prioritizing. The senior was completely paralyzed. She couldn’t make a choice continually toggling among them. This went on for 30-45 minutes  and it was becoming exceedingly stressful for her. I knew what she was thinking but I wanted to see if she’d work her way through it. She didn’t. Her mom was being extremely encouraging but still the decisions weren’t coming.

I finally said, You don’t like them, why not?

Her answer,

I love them, I just don’t like the way I look – my face.

And THAT is what broke me into pieces.

I explained that the reason she starred them in the first place is because her heart really loved them but then, with more time, she critically picked apart absolutely every physical aspect she didn’t like about herself.

She nodded quietly and said you’re right, with tears in her eyes. I asked her to please be easy on herself, that she’s perfect exactly the way she is.

The images she starred quickly and loved are the way everyone else see’s her.

There were tears among the three of us. She chose her images and left. It took me a glass of wine and the rest of the night to rebound from that appointment.

If I could scream this from the rooftop I would. A photoshoot with me is about getting to the core of her personality. To get lost in the moment. To show them that letting go and being exactly who they are is when they feel FREE. Free from self-criticism, control, over-analyzing and comparison.

I want in the worst way to show these girls just how amazing they are. The month of November I’m bringing back the 1111 photoshoot for those who are a little hesitant about getting in front of the camera.
