Last week I posted 3 reasons to book your senior pictures this winter. This week I thought I’d show you an outdoor winter photoshoot as inspiration for stunning winter senior pictures. I’ll give you some insight on how we coordinated this photoshoot.
Taking an Editorial approach
I approach every senior photoshoot from an editorial perspective. With winter senior pictures I think it’s even more important because, let’s be honest, we’re working with some challenges. An editorial approach makes for a more cohesive look and, as a result, magazine worthy images which, because of the challenges, are that much more stunning. Our creative concept:winter palette.
Styling for warmth and beauty
The winter months can be monotone but it’s also a beautiful color palette to work with, creams extending into golds, burnt sienna, coffee, umber, wheat and caramels. It even sounds yummy! I love a tonal look, meaning tone on tone on tone. Dressing like this though, requires mixing textures. Grab my 3 Secrets to Styling if you want more details on this. The beauty of needing to mix textures means, layering cable knits, suedes, fur, corduroy, leather and THAT! is how we stay warm and comfy. There’s a science to creating interesting outfits using one color group but get it right and it’s beautiful.
Choosing locations
Living at a lake and being surrounded by fields has its advantages. Last winter was really cold. The lake froze and there was snow on the ground, both have the natural warm winter palette that worked with our concept. Even without snow these outdoor locations (check back next week for indoor locations) are perfect for stunning winter pictures.
Photoshoot day
Big surprise…it was cold. I mean really cold! Originally, I thought the day was going to be overcast but the sun peeked out for a little bit. I tucked foot warmers into Mya’s boots and for a lot of the shoot you’ll notice her hands are tucked into her sweater. What you don’t see is that she’s holding hand warmers too! Becoming lost in the moment photographing while also wearing multiple layers and moving quite a bit we honestly both forgot about the cold.
Now, you be the judge of how the images turned out. I love a winter photoshoot. It’s unexpected, beautiful and so different. It screams free-spirited and adventurous. That’s your inspiration for stunning winter senior pictures. Are you inspired? GET IN TOUCH. Winter doesn’t last forever.
P.S. Apparently Teen Vous Magazine was inspired enough to publish images from Mya’s photoshoot:) Take a look here.
