Senior pictures with an editorial style…what exactly does this mean? Those words are thrown around a lot and can take on a lot of different meanings. I come from a magazine background and approach all of my senior photoshoots with an editorial style that I’ve refined over the years. Here’s what it means.
Fashion Editorials
A fashion editorial highlights fashion which includes an average of 3-4 looks that follow a concept, i.e winter whites or a splash of color. The images are typically full body and in a location that works with the concept.
Beauty Editorials
Beauty editorials highlight makeup trends or hairstyles. The images are tightlycropped shots of the models’ face.
A Personality Editorial?!
I take the best of both the fashion and beauty editorials, mix in my own style and approach senior pictures or a teen photoshoot as a Personality Editorial (should I copyright that?!). I don’t want to highlight the fashion or the beauty but your personality. This is how I approach senior portraits or teen photoshoots using the basis of magazine style editorials.
Overall Look
There is a cohesive look. We select outfits and locations for senior portraits, based on personality. It’s all about the teen, senior, and how they want to reflect their personality. I do that through a lot of different touchpoints so that we make your photoshoot all about you. For instance, if you’re far more urban we’re not going to go run around in a field. If want to find out =what your photoshoot style is take the PHOTOSHOOT STYLE QUIZ.
Underlying Feel
When the clothes and location are selected it naturally leads to a particular feel. That feel reflects the senior’s personality (this goes for any portrait photoshoot, you don’t have to be a senior, I’m referring to all teens). When you’re most comfortable in clothing that you love and looks good on you, at locations that work with your personality. It’s when you get the truly meaningful, gorgeous images.
Movement
We all look at magazines and ads thinking wow, how does she look so at ease and natural. That’s posing and direction. Seasoned models have learned how to do it over the years but even they, at one point, were taught and directed. I never expect somebody in front of my lens to know how to do that. I do know how to direct them and not just the long lean body types. Every body type requires different direction. I do that for you.
Telling the story
Post photoshoot when all the images are laid out in a cohesive manner is when the editorial, magazine style shows through. It’s a collection of fashion, beauty and personality shots. This is why photo albums accompanied by a video from the day are my most popular product. They tell your story. The story of your day and who you are at this particular time in your life.
How this became a photoshoot NOT a session/sitting
As I’ve said in a lot of other posts, when you book senior portraits or teen portraits with me know that this is NOT as session or a sitting. It’s a carefully thought out editorial styled photoshoot to bring out the best in you and to capture meaningful, soulful images at this particular moment in your life.
NOW is the best time to book your photoshoot
NOW is the time to book a photoshoot. My calendar is starting to fill up. Once the weather starts warming up it’s going to be difficult to get your first choice photoshoot date. My suggestion…BOOK NOW.
