NJ proposal photographer and portrait artist — that’s not a title I saw coming. But here we are, and honestly? I love it.

What some of you may not know is that I started as a family and children’s photographer. After a few years I segued into senior portraits, done my way — full photoshoot style, making it an experience both seniors and their parents will never forget. So as “my kids” grew older, you can only guess what was coming next: couples, engagements, and proposals. And it’s snowballing.

If you’ve read even a couple of posts here, you know that capturing deep emotion, personality, and pure joy is my thing. Proposal and couples photography encapsulates all of that — times a thousand.

NJ Proposal Photographer at Point Pleasant Beach

A couple of weeks ago I headed down to “the shore” — Point Pleasant Beach, for those of you not from Jersey. The date was originally set a day in advance, but due to weather, Justin (soon-to-be groom) asked if we could switch to the day prior. We made it work.

Of course, on my way down it rained for at least half the ride. The plan was for me to sit at the top of the beach — book in hand, beach chair planted — and wait for the couple to arrive. In the rain. All in the name of love, right? But about 30 minutes out, the clouds broke into the most beautiful, cloudless evening.

Blending In: How Surprise Proposal Photography Works

Beach chair. Big baggy sweatshirt. Baseball hat and sunglasses. I set myself up as just another beachgoer reading a book — completely innocuous.

The couple arrived and made their way toward the water. Justin and I had been watching the sky. A plane with a “Will You Marry Me?” banner was due to fly over.

The buzz of the plane broke over the beach. Justin dropped to one knee. Pure magic. She was shocked — click, click, click. She hadn’t even seen the plane yet. Justin pointed to the sky — click, click, click.

The Moment That Made It Extra Special

Full disclosure: this one hit different. Jillian is my niece.

Justin turned her toward me — click, click, click. And then, to top it all off, he turned her toward the top of the beach where their immediate families were waiting to join the celebration. Her mom and sister had flown up from Florida.

Click, click, click.

It was tears and joy wrapped up in one huge bundle of love. Love wasn’t just in the air that evening — it was absolutely everywhere on that perfect New Jersey beach.
